Actually, the ‘upgrade’ wasn’t an upgrade so much as a switch back. I’ve been on ubuntu from dapper through fiesty, and switched over to mandriva 2008 yesterday. I thought I’d backed everything up, but I’d forgot a few things.
Everything in /var
doesn’t sound like much, except that’s where my development php code was, as well as [...]

Specifically of technical books. I’ve got a small backlog of books I wanted reviewed for techbookreviews.com. I thought I had more time than I did, but I don’t (isn’t that always how it goes?). So, in the interests of time and getting other people besides myself involved, I’d like to invite some of you to [...]

I just stumbled on Zotero, a fantastic firefox plugin for archiving, annotating and searching stuff you find on the web. There’s very little I can say about it that they don’t say better on their site. I’ve only been using it today, but it’s simply amazing. I’ve been looking for something like this for a [...]

I found a new blog today - ioreader.com. Perhaps it’s not *new* itself, but it was new to me. There’s quite a lot of good PHP writing over there, and I’ve not come across it in any previous aggregators or lists before. Maybe I’m just out of the loop? Check [...]

for the social web to evolve to the next level. Is that at all controversial? I hope at least the title is, as I’d like to provoke a bit of thought in you, the reader, about the topic of DRM.
I’ve been mulling this and related topics for some time, but not quite in these words. [...]

Going through SOLR putting together my presentation, I’ve restarted thinking of my hosted SOLR service I was considering some time ago. I was thinking last night that a hosted blog search - wordpress, to start with - would be a great service, and pretty easy to set up. Wordpress “search” functionality is something that seems [...]

Friend Joe Stump recently (as in today, I think) launched correlate.us, a feed aggregator which brings together your personal feeds from delicious, twitter, flickr and digg. I believe more feed streams will be forthcoming, but for now it’s hitting some of the larger players. In a nutshell, it’s a way to see not only tagged [...]

I’m posting a repeat of this request because this blog feed was recently accepted in to the planet-php.net blog aggregator/feed thingy, and likely a new group of people will see this and be able to respond. To that end, I’m calling for people to visit http://www.phpjobbook.com/survey to answer questions about their PHP job hunting and [...]

I’m rekindling a project I started last year, but had to shelve for a bit. As you can tell by the title of this post, this project is a book aimed at PHP job seekers. I’m in the process of scheduling interviews with companies, recruiters and individual job seekers to bring together their [...]

Was just thinking a bit ago that ‘digg’ is all about user generated content, yet it’s all submitted via the ‘digg’ links and such. A little hokey since anyone can submit anything in to the queue of ‘upcoming’ stories to get voted on. Why not bypass the submission process and just focus on voting? Take [...]
